LIFE IS A CANVAS:

This year's show explores how we build, or paint our lives, as a metaphor to how an artist creates a painting.  We explore various stages of life and segue between movements with help and wisdom from Bob Ross.

The field will be decorated with a large stage in the shape of a painter's palette.  This will be the visual focal point of the show.  There will also be 15 scrims spread around the field that will switch from white (blank canvas) to black (tension & turbulence) to various colors (a life painted well).

PART 1:  music = Flying by Cody Fry

This movement is all about how a life, and painting, begin blank.  Anything is possible.  Life is full of possibilities.  We can begin painting our life in any direction.  We can fly anywhere.

Bob Ross quote:  "Every masterpiece begins the same way, with a blank canvas.  A world of possibility waiting for the first brush stroke, the first decision, the first moment."

PART 2:  music = Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones

This movement depicts the turbulent moments of life - the intensity, the tension, dare I say, the upsetting moments of life.

Bob Ross Quote:  "You have to allow the paint to break to make it beautiful.  You need the dark in order to show the light."

PART 3:  music = Gravity by Sarah Bareilles

This movement portrays the conflicting feelings of life - the conflicting colors in a painting.  Life (and paintings) are filled with dark and bright colors, happiness and sadness.

Bob Ross Quote:  "You've gotta have opposites in painting.  It's like in life...  Gotta have a little sadness once in a while so you know when the good times come."

PART 4:  music = It Could Have Been Me by The Struts

This movement is designed to be motivational and inspirational.  Color begins to be introduced.  The music is positive and encouraging.  This song talks about NOT saying, "it could have been me" at the end of your life.  Go get life.  Make changes.  Re-calculate.  Don't get stuck.  Take risks.  No regrets.

Bob Ross Quote:  "In painting, you have the ability to move mountains and bend rivers.  You have unlimited power."

PART 4 CODA:  music = This Is Me from The Greatest Showman

The end of the show is designed to be a celebratory reflection on the painting (the life) that we have created.  The field will get very colorful as we perform a very relatable tune that says, "This Is Me!"  This is my painting (for the individual performer).  This is OUR painting (for the collective band).  How are YOU painting your life?

Bob Ross Quote:  "We see the world in our own way.  That's what makes it such a special place.  You can do anything you want to do.  This is your world!"
